In chapter 24, the man called Freddie Jones invited Jurgis to his house, provided a meal, and talked to Jurgis about his family. Why did Freddie do these things to Jurgis?
Explain your thought about the reason why Freddie was so kind to Jurgis.
In the book it describes how drunk Freddie Jones spoke. “Been up—hic—up—against it, hey?” Jurgis was begging to Freddie Jones for money. Mr. Jones went home with Jurgis and gave Jurgis some things to eat. Freddie also gave a check which was $100 to pay for a cap. I think Freddie Jones was kind to Jurgis, because Freddie was so stressed out. He said “I’m hard up, too, my goo’ fren’, I’ve got cruel parents." Because he was quite stressed out, Freddie wanted to do something to solve his stress and that was inviting Jurgis to his home.
Jugris begged Freddle Jones for money. Freddle Jones gave Jugris something to eat and have a 100 dollar bill to pay for a cap. Through the book, He is king to Jugris and comfortable enough to talk with him about his life. I think he didn't have any plan to harm Jugris. This quote "No Money! Ho,ho less be calm, ole boy jess like me! No moneym either a'most bested! Why don't you go home, then, same's me?" (p.267)tells how Freedle Jones acted to Jugris. He come towards to Jugris friendly.
When Jurgis was begging for a money, one strange guy walked up to Jurgis. Jurgis begged him for money as he normally does, the strange guy, Freddie Jones talked about their life and went to his house. I think eventhough Freddie was drunk, while he talked with Jurgis about their life, and when Freddie found out that Jurgis had no where to go, Freddie may have felt sympathy towards Jurgis. In the book, "Why don't you go home, then, same's me? I haven't any home,"said Jurgis (Pg.267) So that feeling led Freddie to give poor Jurgis $100 and brought him to his house.
Freddie Jones was lonely- He "has no money"(he says on p 285) and he says "awful lonesome- nobody home!"(p 285). Even thought he had many money, that couldn't fulfill his needs. He felt that they were same- both lonely and unfulfilled by the society(althought the amount of it differed very much between the two).So he felt that Jurgis was his friend. The quote " My fren', Mr. Rudnose, Hamilton-shake han's" on p291 is supporting this.
